Green- Schools Experiments
Our Green-Schools Committee went to all classes in the school performing two experiments linked our our Marine Environment programme.
What not to Flush
The fist experiment investigated the practice of flushing materials such as baby wipes, kitchen towel, paper napkins and tissue paper down our toilets. The students placed these items in large jars of water and simulated a flushing action by shaking the jar vigorously. It soon became obvious that the only material which breaks down into small particles by flushing is the toilet paper.
The Ocean heats up much slower than the atmosphere
The second experiment demonstrated how the oceans heat up much slower than our atmosphere. The students filled one balloon with water and one with air. The balloon with air burst immediately when exposed to a naked flame but after 2 minutes we gave up trying to burst the balloon holding the water by holding the flame close to it. The water kept the rubber cool and the naked flame could not burn a hole it it. This proves the importance of our oceans in the fight against global warming.
