Webwise offers excellent advice for parents on Internet Safety. There are 4 main areas in the parents section – Advice, Explainers, How to and Publications. As part of our SPHE curriculum we look at some webwise lessons over the year.
Webwise also offers up to date information on apps that you may hear your child mention. It is worthwhile being informed – Explainers .

Parents Guide to a Better Internet: This booklet will help parents to help their children have a positive experience when they are online. It provides information, advice and conversation starters about the benefits and risks they need to be aware of when using the internet. Topics explored in the guide include cyberbullying, screen time, sexting, social media and online pornography.

This is a book for children to read at an age-appropriate level about being on the internet. The book contains many decodable words and could be used as part of a series of digital citizenship lessons.

Kiddle - a safer alternative to Google search
Kiddle.co: Kiddle is powered by Google Safe Search but is not affiliated with Google LLC. Kiddle search results satisfy family friendly requirements, they filter sites with explicit or deceptive content. Kiddle also has filtered Google Images to have more child-appropriate results. The Images tab has Google Images. The Kimages tab has images from the Kiddle Encyclopaedia which can be used if attributed/cited that they were sourced from Kiddle Encyclopaedia. This could be set as the default search engine on your home devices.

Swiggle
Swiggle is another child friendly search engine, ad free. It gives child oriented results and uses Google Safe Search.
HTML Heroes; Play HTML Heroes and make your way through lots of fun interactive puzzles and activities.
Teach pupils the importance of digital citizenship and online safety with the help of the HTML Heroes!
Lessons explore themes such as being safe online, finding reliable information, privacy, chatting, playing and learning online.
The programme is supported by fun activities, animations, short illustrated stories and more. There is one programme for 1st and 2nd class and another for 3rd and 4th Class.
Monitor your child’s iPad Use: Apple have produced a great list of the features available for iPad and iPhone to help parents become aware of the parental controls. With a few taps you can keep your kids from accessing movies, TV shows, music, apps, books, or podcasts that contain things you don’t want them to see or hear, restrict certain websites and more – Apple.Com Families
